Peter Wells discovers an old portrait in a Washington, D.C. antique store that he believes has not only been painted by John Singer Sargent, but the Victorian lady's delicate features so intrigue him that he offers to buy it. The antique dealer refuses to sell the painting until it's authenticated. Thus, Peter begins a quest to learn more about this breathtaking beauty. Is this the face of someone he recognizes? SARGENT’S LADY is a story of love, sacrifice, and survival from the late 1800’s - 1950’s throughout the United States and Europe. After a clandestine love affair in Paris, Maud Driscoll, a Boston debutante, finds herself alone and pregnant, only to learn the baby’s father has been murdered. As an aspiring young artist, Maud is forced by Victorian convention to relinquish her baby at birth. She continues studying and painting until the outbreak of the Great War when she returns to the United States. Several years later, Maud marries a prominent Boston scion but discovers her marriage a farce. Not wanting to face any public humiliation or gossip, she returns to Europe, this time to Italy. The subsequent years bring her worldwide fame through her artwork. She finds love and marries a baron. At the onset of WWII, the Nazis commandeer their home, destroying all the vineyards, and the winery. Maud and her husband, Giovanni, work as servants to survive the shattering onslaught. They stay alive, dreaming they can begin a new life in California. Post war, Maud’s life takes a dramatic turn. She finds her son and discovers he married the daughter of her best friend. The families unite in love and in common interests as they plant vineyards, and build a winery. Will history repeat itself?

A broad sweeping novel of women's friendships, tragic love, lost children, and the incredible portrait that sparks the journey in the opening chapter. Intertwining the lives and ambitions of longtime friends Maud, an artist, and Lillie, who becomes successful in the clothing industry, and the romance of early twentieth-century California as well as Italy, as well as some war and spy intrigue, this novel adds the bonus of letters between Maud and Lillie chronicling your friendship. This novel makes me yearn for the lost art of letter writing. The letters lend an even greater intimacy and the strength of female friendship. Maud's quest for love (starting with a dashing British aristocrat) and Lillie's steady marriage present complementary but different portraits of women's lives. A work of art and a compelling read.

what a magnificant book.well writen,and so youching.
Had to keep reading.
I loved this book - could hardly put it down.
Really an enjoyable read. My husband thought it was a really good read and he is pretty critical!
Skillful writer, engaging story.
Where did this author come off with the idea of promoting a book using the name John Singer Sargent and a painting he never painted for this awful book. The promotion was a falsehood and not till buying it and reading the front piece did the viewer learn that this was fiction. The writing was pathetic in the form of letters and I would advise anyone truly interested in the history of art not to be fooled into buying this book, we have enough of that going on today in the White House.
I normally don't care for historical novels, but the writer had a way, with her descriptive words and phrases as well as a compelling story, of bringing this novel to life. It had my interest from the beginning and every time the plot had a twist, it was a surprise to me and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. Added to that, it was wonderful to see two friends who were so different stay so connected to one another. Even if you don't think you'd like a novel of this type, you owe it to yourself to give it a read; I believe you'll like it.
